This was like an early version of Adobe Camera RAW. All the incoming Kodak DCS RAW photos were “developed” using my “DCS Photo” plug-in. This process would merrily repeat and the result was very fast delivery of photos.Īll photos selected by the photo editors using Photo Mechanic were then sent to AP Server folders for the “preppers”, aka those who manipulate pixels in Photoshop, to open and process. The laptop operator (aka laptop “sitter”) would literally catch the hard disk then carefully hand the PCMCIA disk back to the photographer. There’s no way a hard disk would survive landing on concrete stadium steps. I have video of this behavior with my PowerBook G3 laptop (which still runs to this day). Then, most importantly, the editor would warn the laptop operator that the hard disk (aka a spinning magnetic platter) was about to be ejected, because sometimes these disks would pop out of the laptop reader “unexpectedly” and with great intent. – Senior Manager of Technical Support, Andrew H. AP changed to some Australian frequency to stop the interference. Howard recalls that during NFL’s “smoke test” on Saturday they discovered that AP was using the same frequency as the blimps and AP knocked out their video feed. I know there were 6 wireless links using BreezeCOM technology (early 802.11), and the signals were bounced off repeaters from a light ring above the stadium. I recall two photo editors assigned to the four fixed photographers, each editor covering two photographers. The crate held a battery (UPS), a BreezeCOM wireless link, and radio gear for voice communication between the laptop operator and an assigned photo editor in the trailer. This was a first for AP to have wireless transmission from the field.Įach photographer in the seats had a “laptop operator” sitting next to them with a Mac laptop zip-tied to an upside-down milk crate. But you have to get it right, and this would eliminate the chance of any NC2000e photo slipping into the system claiming to be “film” quality. Howard wasn’t upset that I called it the Elway Release (even though he was rooting for Green Bay), it was the last minute changes. Project Manager Howard Gros was not too happy to have to install the Elway Release on all of the computers in the trailer, and especially the laptops that were ready to leave for the stadium seats and end-zone to accompany the fixed-position photographers. So I jokingly called it the “Elway Release” because I was rooting for Denver. Jim proceeded to test this build, but I had to give it a new version number and I was at 0.99. It was an easy-enough fix (what us nerds call a “one-liner”), so I agreed and made a new build in the trailer on my laptop. ![]() Story continues after photo, Photo © 1998 Dennis Walker But since AP’s Super Bowl coverage was all digital by then, Jim asked me to just “rubber stamp” every photo that PM processed with this IPTC field indicating a digital source. I frankly think it was a “be prepared” warning to AP’s members (newspapers) because the images from the 1.3 MP NC2000e camera were a bit low resolution, especially when the editors did a tight crop. Back then it was important for AP to include the words “DIGITAL PHOTO” in some IPTC field (I can’t remember which one) if the photo was taken by a digital camera versus film. ![]() Making a new build of PM on game day sounded crazy to me, but Jim explained why it wasn’t such a big deal, and that he had faith in me. Normally everything is all setup and locked down by Saturday, and Sunday is to just get the job done. I laughed at him because this is definitely not standard protocol. So I was a bit surprised when Jim Dietz, my technology contact at AP, asked me to make just one last minute change to PM. Update: Flash Anniversary Sale on Photo Mechanic is on now! ![]() ![]() ![]() In nearly 90% of these cases, the customer chose Tabular because of its effectiveness and simplicity. Often, when customers approached us asking for an engine, we developed both Multidimensional and Tabular proof of concepts. Other common issues are DISTINCT COUNT measures, many-to-many relationships, and leaf-level calculations: all of these are features where obtaining good performance is a challenge. Not to say that Multidimensional is slow, but creating an efficient Multidimensional database requires a major effort: it is hard to automate and it is complex to optimize when an application automatically generates the model. These companies usually considered Multidimensional, but chose not to adopt it for two main reasons: MDX complexity (from the developers’ point of view) and performance. Companies contacted us when they were looking for a solution to a specific problem-specifically, looking for an engine for their product or service with good performance and low maintenance cost. Until today, we have never been proactive in promoting Tabular for such scenarios. In other scenarios that we have helped to build, companies use a mix of both approaches. ![]() Others provide a multi-tenant service, creating databases on demand, and then offering to access them through standard clients (such as Excel, Reporting Services, and other third-party tools). The usage may vary: some companies created a single large database deployed manually and queried by their front end (this made it necessary to write their own DAX query builder). In other words, users do not even know that Tabular is powering their reports. ![]() Instead, they integrated Tabular features into their existing software as a back-end server for their analytical needs. I have seen many companies adopt Tabular as the analytical engine for their product or service without actually creating a “BI project” in a canonical way (gather requirements, design a prototype, get feedback, improve the model, and loop until it is done). My guess is that Microsoft was surprised by it as well. However, in this adoption process, something surprising happened. Thus, users have adopted Tabular mainly for new projects-especially in companies that had not used Multidimensional before. This is expected and very natural, as Multidimensional is complementary to Tabular and is not going to disappear. Existing customers of SSAS Multidimensional (Multidimensional hereinafter) have many reasons for not adopting Tabular: missing features, skills shortage, lack of tools, legacy (!) OLAP ecosystems. In these early years of SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular (SSAS Tabular, or Tabular hereinafter) adoption, SQLBI has helped several customers in their first implementation using the new xVelocity in-memory engine and the DAX language. You can download this article in PDF format at the end of this page. This article provides several reasons why Tabular could be the right choice for the analytical engine embedded in a service or an application. When the solution serves other software instead of a human user, the challenges are completely different. The point of view is unlike that of creating a “classic” Business Intelligence solution. Easy to reprint and revisit: Unlike traditional, scrapbook-like photo albums, digital photo books can be reproduced at any time.High-quality paper choices: The paper inside should be durable, of high quality, and resistant to tearing, and there should be a variety of types, such as gloss, semigloss, and pearly. So the service should offer a range of options that look nice and can withstand years of handling. As there is no single impression material meets all of the ideal requirements, significant improvements have been made all over the years, including the introduction of vinyl polyether silicone (VPES) hybrids. On the other hand, PVS has great stability, high tear strength, and excellent recovery, but with a hydrophobic nature. Polyethers have excellent flow and hydrophilic properties, but they are rigid, with slow recovery and low tear strength. Polyvinylsiloxanes (PVS) and polyethers (PE) are the most commonly used rubber base materials for secondary impressions all over the world. The three materials were statistically insignificant from each other, and all met the ISO4823 requirement of having greater than 96.5% recovery. Start by adding hot water to the cup until it is 80 percent full. You can use any small cup for serving your long shot, but traditionally, a long shot is consumed from a small tulip-shaped cup that holds between 150 and 200 ml. After about 20 seconds, you should have 15 ml of coffee, which makes up your ristretto shot. Put the portafilter back in the grouphead and begin the brewing process. Tamp the coffee down like you usually do. Fill a single shot basket portafilter with seven to nine grams of the coffee you ground. Start by grinding whole coffee beans fresh, aiming for a grind that’s a little bit finer than you usually use for espresso. The two drinks may result in the same amount of liquid, but the makeup is different and the flavor would be different as well. While the double espresso is two shots, the long shot is one shot of espresso pulled with more water than the double espresso. A double espresso consists of two shots of espresso with water, pulled at a ratio of 1:2. The difference between the two drinks is the ratio of water to espresso. The long shot has a milder, smoother flavor while the double espresso has a thicker, denser mouthfeel. Double Espresso or Double Shotīe careful not to confuse a long shot with a double espresso, also called a double shot. A long shot may also go by the name café allongé, caffe lungo, or lungo. Long shots may be pulled for the same amount of time as single shots of espresso or for slightly longer. There is an alternative method that involves pulling the shot first and then adding the hot water on top. For the long shot, the espresso is usually pulled directly into a cup of hot water. ![]() On the other hand, a long shot is less concentrated than a ristretto because it uses a longer brewing time and more water than the ristretto. A ristretto always comes served with a glass of water. This is sometimes called a “short shot” of espresso and is made by pulling just the first part of a regular espresso shot. A ristretto takes about half as much water as you’d use making a single shot of espresso. So less water is run through the coffee grounds for a ristretto than for a single shot. Ristretto means “restricted,” which refers to the reduced amount of water and reduced brewing time that go into making this concentrated espresso drink. That means the flavor of a ristretto is more concentrated than a single shot, while the flavor of a long shot is gentler and more diluted. In short, a ristretto uses less water than a single shot of espresso while a long shot uses more water. ![]() We’re ready to give you the breakdown of exactly what goes into a ristretto and a long shot, as well as how they differ.
